because i don’t have an admin category for posts, here’s what i did for an update on a tom baker scarf knitalong i’m part of:

i’m much further along now.

more macroz maid

first off a double entendre:

and then a bunch more on the next page that are spoilers for Sound of Drums!

someone mentioned that rose was meant to be RTD’s mary sue character:

anyone else think of that cover to dark tower IV when they saw the gallifrey flashback?:

i just got inspired by a slashdot ad:

and because i have better pictures to choose from now that the episode’s out, i revamped my government one from:

bonus: here’s one i did just for ken:

england day 4: bath

from sept 06

bath in general:

really all there is to do in bath is the bath, and the abbey. and this amazing chocolatier near both of those things. but it’s still a pretty place.

the minerva-sulis bath

so the bath at bath was loaded with information. it was one of those places where you get those little handheld remote control thingummy ear devices and everyone walks around with their heads tilted, listening to voices only they can hear, but y’know, it was an ok place. since i don’t care about history and i can read, i gave up on the audio thing pretty quickly.

gifts for the goddess minerva-sulis.

here they tried to reconstruct an archway or some such.

i think this is a guy and some hunting dogs, but for all i know they’re sheep.

i saw someone else doing this and really liked the way it looked, so i staged my own. taken by ken.

i always manage to find the tombstones in everything.

next page: still in the baths

still in the baths

we… didn’t go in the waters. now i wish i’d had time (and money) for a spa, at least elsewhere in bath.

taken by ken.

in the sauna rooms, these tiles would be supporting the floor so that steam could rise from underneath… or something. it’s been ten months, i’m a little fuzzy on the details 🙂

next page: still in the baths

still in the baths!

every now and then there’d be a little waterfall, or aqueduct thingy, and i’d try and try to get a decent picture.

there was also this incredible wishing pond.

next page: onward to the bath abbey

bath abbey

this was actually the first thing i took pictures of in bath. it’s gorgeous.

immediately upon entering there’s a ton of old-school signage. it reminded me of a bulletin board in a coffee shop.

…antlers?

next page: still in bath abbey, and back to the train!

still in bath abbey

some of these i liked better sideways.

i love how it’s resting on the back of an eagle. america ftw!

back to the train!

robotmedia movie update

i am finished with the rough video cut! now we just need to put some stylie on it and make the audio effects and so on. despite our mediocre efforts some scenes are very dark and very quiet. go figure!

i feel really productive and then i remember that i haven’t actually done any “real” work for a week.

yay

filming for the robotmedia movie (due this friday!) is complete and we’re capturing the video now. we’re lucky to have such talented, capable, patient friends willing to be on-camera spouting ridiculous lines. 🙂 thanks to all who helped.

new fanvid

this time i tried my hand at buffy the vampire slayer. i’ve been wanting to pair mayor wilkins and rasputina’s “the mayor” ever since i first heard the song back in 2005. cheap, i know, but it works.

the mayor

england day 3: avebury

6+ months after the fact, here’s pictures from avebury in england.

my first view of cooling towers, from the train

the good thing about avebury is that you can get right up close to the stones.

about to get crushed by the infamous barber’s stone! (taken by ken)

a pagan’s dream? standing between the gateway stones. (taken by ken)

these sheep look surreal, but i assure you they were quite real. this is about as close as one can get to the sheep in avebury, or really just about anywhere.

climbing the hill to the next circle

thatched cottages. i wouldn’t mind living in one of these for the rest of my life.

there were all sorts of different paths to wander onto. on one we found a couple of clues meant for a kids’ scavenger hunt, and also this snail.

the sacrilege! i guess sheep have vastly different rituals here.

sheep thought i’d gone.

i basically spent my whole day harassing sheep.

we found a graveyard! this graveyard actually made us miss the bus.

the gravestone so funky i had to take two pictures of it.

this pub was beautiful, and incidentally had some good ale, which we partook of while waiting for the next bus.

ken made a new friend…

paws/ark 2000 pictures from 2006

although both of my cameras died in the very beginning of the paws/ark 2000 tour i took with my class this year, it dawned on me that i never really scanned in most of my pictures from last year.

so i had five rolls of film to develop after my arizona trip mlk weekend and after the PAWS/Ark2000 field trip the weekend after that. but because i relied heavily on the zoom lens this time and took pictures in a lot of “questionable” settings (as in, very dark. not as in, a fetish strip club), i didn’t really want to get prints of everything. on the advice of the davis wiki i decided to just get the negatives printed out from costco at $2.20 each and scan them in at home. so i actually have a few to share already, with more on the way. it is a little more work but it looks like 40% of the pictures didn’t turn out, so probably a wise move on my part.

what kind of language is this?

look, it’s abu! but don’t look too close, this guy will probably tear your eyes out.

there’s something very haunting about the way harriet peels apart your facade and stares into the very essence of your soul, isn’t there? “she’s already looked at all of you and knows you completely now.” pat would say this about all the animals, but you could actually believe it was entirely true with harriet.

your native language is beautiful, but we prefer english.

it makes me sad to see these guys locked up for life.

i bet you anything they’re sad too.

if you see anyone walking a large cat in new york, shoot them.

it was really hard for me to fathom that these guys would rip me apart if i strayed into their enclosure.

when does my life start?

we swear we’re cute and cuddly, just like hobbes. come inside!

idle trunks are the devil’s playground.

although they tried to get the oliphaunts weaned off meat they had been turned young, and bloodthirsty carnivores they would always be.

that’s pat derby with one of the oliphaunts. the ‘sucky face’ is apparently an elusive and long-sought-after expression to elephant enthusiasts.

the surreality of ark 2000 summed up

England Day 2: London!

unfortunately i can’t remember most details of where or of what these pictures were taken… and i took a ton. yes, there really are that many pages.

Tower of London

goofing off before the yeoman tour starts

a collapsed wall?

next page: more tower!

Tower of London

sucks to be that guy, eh? i tended to say that a lot. the british are visually kind of brutal.

i have no idea what the significance of this wall is.

inside this building some guy was actually doing PAPERWORK. it’s like when you find out your teacher is human.

next page: ravens!

Tower of London
The Ravens

!!!!!

i think this is my favorite one.

i like this one too though.

The Jewel House

ridiculous lions and unicorns were EVERYWHERE. you’d think they were symbols of the nation or something. and what’s with the unicorn’s bling? sheesh. somebody should have told it chains are out.

next page: armory

Tower of London
The Armory

it’s a good thing they had a toilet, because i really had to go.

where the poo goes… onto people below!

effigy of guy fawkes. clever!

these wooden guys were just hanging out drinking ale at the armory.

next page: more armory

Tower of London
The Armory

the armory was one of those places you never can leave. we kept going for the exit and it would just take us to a different level of the museum.

again, sucks to be this guy.

a cluster of nails and other stuff melted together after a fire. this was around the time we realized that the british apparently keep EVERYTHING because it might have significance someday.

kickin’ pillars, eh?

i… think this was taken in the armory but i have no idea what it’s of.

next page: some of the living quarters

Tower of London
The Living Quarters

the private prayer room of some dude whose name i should probably know.

little personal chapel area.

luckily ken had some floo powder on him.

this was pretty amazing… some of the carvings of people imprisoned in the towers. some very intellectual, some artistic…

next page: wandering randomly around london!

Various Wanderings

EAT ended up saving our lives. i wanted to hold out for a pasty, or chips, or even a jacket potato but every place we went to didn’t have pasties or chips, and were OUT of jacket potatoes! eventually we found this goat cheese and sweet potato pie, and settled for it because we were hungry. it was really good though.

i think this is supposed to be st. george and the dragon?

fish!

london… home of ugly babies

and really ugly fishpeople!

what do they call a guy who can’t hold on to his porpoise?

the most bizarre statue i think i’ve ever seen.

“pardon me, but have you seen the rest of my head? i’m quite perturbed.”

next page: st. pauls, tea, and buckingham palace!

St. Paul’s Cathedral
we didn’t actually go inside st. paul’s, knowing we’d see other cathedrals and being REALLY exceptionally stingy that

day for some reason. so i took pictures of the statue outside:

Afternoon Tea at Fortnum & Mason’s
yeah, we went to the most expensive place to have tea that doesn’t have a dress code. sue us, we’re tourists. 🙂

Buckingham Palace

“why won’t the queen mum return my calls?”

this is so expressive. i loved it. part of the queen victoria memorial.

how did they sculpt my life’s aspirations so accurately?

next page: accosted by animals at st. james park!

St. James Park

the squirrels let us get so close. i kept wondering how close…

we got our answer. bold little buggers. richard was just telling me though that he once saw a squirrel jump on a woman in this park 🙂

this picture cracks me up for some reason.

ken watches the greylag geese

goose roadblock

lorenz had good taste in animal companions.

this waterfowl was strange. it had white skeleton-like feet! never got a great picture of it though.

next page: goose stampede!

St. James Park

then the man with the bread came and it all went to hell.

don’t they look like fat little nazi stormtroopers? or maybe people in the T station.

the bread eventually ran out.

i’d love to be the caretaker of this park! i assume that’s who this cottage is for?

next page: big ben and london at night!

Big Ben and the London Eye

around this time it started raining. it all felt so romantic. and wet.

Back to Blackheath

ah, london at night.

london. where even the lampposts need excessive decorations with cherubs and such.

where even stuff left on the sidewalk is picturesque.

chips at last!!!!!! we got them in blackheath though. grrr, london, grrr.

1st day in England: Blackheath, Greenwich, and Piccadilly Circus

part 2 of my england collection of photos. these are actually OF england the country, too, so perhaps they’ll be a little more exciting than the last set. ;P

this is the front door of the house where we stayed all week. the fox door knocker is a testament to the large urban red fox population in the area. i actually saw one in the next door neighbor’s backyard through the bathroom window, but didn’t get to my camera in time to get a definitive picture. the knocker will have to do.

as soon as we got in we felt compelled to have tea. i fell in love with one of their coffee cups.

on our way through blackheath to greenwich. cats don’t like their pictures taken, so i must tell you that the cat looked like an intentional window dressing before i got the camera out. now it’s trying to hide itself.

blackheath!

some monument to the queen. not like there’s many of THOSE in england, right?

greenwich!

there was some weird clock exhibit at the greenwich observatory, one section asking kids to write down when time “stood still for them.” this answer was good, but the next is even more silly (ATTN SPOILERS LOL):

next page: greenwich park!

greenwich has a nice park with lots of pretty (and old) trees.

we were quite taken with them.

we found a deer sanctuary in the park!

i guess there’s a halfway decent picture of a fox visiting the deer.

one thing about england is that their phrasing is so polite. you should have seen the warning signs in the airport customs area.

next page: “the heath” and piccadilly circus!

the ravens also didn’t like having their pictures taken. so after a while i gave up and focused on the pretty tower on “the heath”

here we are lying on some dead people! how romantic!

on the underground. dr. who series 1 was right!

this really disturbed me.

piccadilly circus is just beautiful at night. and look! doubledecker buses! can it get any more british? CAN IT??!?!

the famous piccadilly cupid!

then we went home to sleep. i don’t have a picture of that.

england trip: new england

so by now everyone’s probably forgotten that back in september i made it back to the homeland as well as the motherland. here’s the first round of pictures, from NEW england (sorry to be such a tease but don’t worry– more are coming!):

part 1: davis to danvers

introducing: PSI. at the airport. god i was so sick of airports by this time.

jess and hooman win for cutest couple.

ken and hooman feed each other with popcorn. check this out; you can totally see the arcs the popcorn kernels make as they fly through the air!

next 2 pages: rockport

part 2: bearskin neck

my dad has strange decorating sense.

and he’s apparently just as into meta-art as i am.

look! my parents salvaged my funeral cone from my waltham to california move! they hadn’t told me about this, so it was a pleasant surprise to see my old friend again. even if it is orange now! if you look really closely you can see the vertical “funeral” still bleeding through the orange. fantastic!

i love this picture of ken.

my mom hates having her picture taken.

unless it’s with flowers.

or she’s selling something. that’s a uv lamp, by the way. she got this nail polish that supposedly changes colors in the sun, but i guess she keeps forgetting about the dangers of uv when she demonstrates it to customers.

pictures within pictures grab me.

the davy jones, a building my parents own that’s adjacent to the shop (and which they’re STILL fighting the town council to get the rights to fix up). we had a friend named margie who used to sit on the deck down there and meditate. she rocked.

next page: rockport travels

part 3: out and about the coasty area

at the mexican place in peabody

my parents are cute, but i couldn’t get ride of the spots of light on them so i just made this a small triptych.

those lumps are sleepy cats. i originally wanted to get just them, but then got enthralled by the typical rockport driveway.

and this, for contrast, is the idyllic rockport driveway. i made them stop the car and wait to take this one. i felt a little creepy doing it though.

small coastal town is not complete without a piece of clothing on a pole. ken pointed this out to me (he knows me well).

the sunsets there– beautiful doesn’t cover it.

next page: rolling rocks

part 4: rolling rocks

rolling rocks (or whatever it’s called) deserved a page all its own– you can hear the rocks clatter and rumble as the tide moves in and out. sorry about all the pictures; i was really taken by the scenery and how “new england beach” it all looked that day. with the gulls, and the green frothy waves, and the blue sky and red rocks. perfect.

taming the wild waves…

next: the dreaded family dinner!

part 5: the parents meet!!!!

so i had this wacky idea that my parents and ken’s parents should meet at some point; seeing as how we’ve been dating for almost 5 years now? this was a good opportunity; both sets would want to send us off to merry olde england, and we didn’t want to leave anyone out. and you know, it actually went well!

doesn’t ken look thrilled??!?!!?!?

state fair ’06

state fair trip with ken and janie in september!

first order of business was to use up the rides we bought. my pick was the swing ride (my absolute favorite of carny rides)

after rides we decided to try to find the baby animals and petting zoo. we kept getting lost.

eventually after much frustration following the wonky signs, we hit paydirt.

could you really eat me?
born an hour before we got there! welcome to the world little hamburger!

i think they all look so exhausted.

alas, no holding of the piggies today, but at least we saw some speckled ones!

next page: petting zoo, at long last!

the goats at the petting zoo were already talking smack about us.

at least i don’t look absolutely ridiculous when i eat.

the Exalted Lama!

everybody wanted their pictures with the Exalted Lama.

last year a deer was doing this exact thing.

we’re the trio. you’ve heard of us.

this guy gave me the hardest time getting his picture! he was pretty ornery. or shy.

the deer were ravenous that day. i swear, these roles were reversed with the goats last year.

finally the deer fixated on ken. i guess to the animal kingdom he’s one big salt lick.

next page: is it art?

janie hit it off with this bear thing. they’re already talking of the wedding.

(taken by janie)

mario showed up but he just wanted to nap.

i’m not making this up. there was a bling category in the arts and crafts building. and there’s an altoid’s tin on the guitar. and yes, a bling toilet seat cover.

harry potter chess set! too bad it’s the same 10 characters repeated over and over. those are not turds, by the way, on the griffindor side. they’re sorting hats. i know, i got confused at first too.

the love ducks

this is generally what happens when one sees a cockatoo. they just gape at it in wonder.

goliath, the biggest turkey evar, or something. he was kind of scary and i thought he’d peck the lens out of my camera.

the superheroes exhibit was sort of lame. but here’s a lego batman.
(taken by ken)

the dog looks embarrassed to me.

next page: i’m running out of titles

it’s my bolo! remember my bolo, from the free box at delta? this is it!!!!

a muppet was driving. an onlooker was bemused.

i don’t know what to tell you, kid. horses get hungry too, you know.

janie braves this totally messed-up coaster!

(taken by ken)

here we are “enjoying” the vocal “talent” show.

i think i need some homework (is sex pt 2)

something to keep me busy and stop me from making more of these:

Aeryn Sun is Sex

please do not comment in livejournal. follow this link to comment at my blog.

love, sex, whatever

so i’ve decided instead of all those colorful ” — is love” banners mine are going to start saying ” — is sex.” because really, that’s what i’m getting at here. here is my first creation, made just today:

Robert Englund is Sex

can you tell we just finished the nightmarathon (nightmare on elm st 5, 6, and 7) last night? i know, i know, but the whole kneehigh boots/trenchcoat thing in new nightmare was obviously just too much for me, and now i am even more of an englund groupie than before. i’m not even going to mention how adorable he looked in a painting smock and tinted lennon glasses (not as freddy krueger, mind you– that would be odd).

i was originally going to do just reds and purples and pinks for the “is sex” series, but i really think with the wide range of colors that would have ended up looking worse.

others i plan to do in the series: house, james spader, aeryn sun, aimee mann, trent reznor, viggo mortensen, ed norton, thom yorke, cowboys, vampires, gunchix, pointy objects ?

sf zoo and a bonus picture!

remember that zoo trip in san francisco last month with sara and karl? here’s the pictures!

crouching birdies

hidden ostrich

we managed to get to the zoo after feeding time, which is the only logical reason for nearly all the animals being just completely zonked.

i mean, look at them. they look like the morning after a wild party. and a squirrel is stealing their food while they sleep it off.

“whoa… what did i do last night? …and why’s all my food gone?”

this dikdik was shy!

apparently san francisco zoo has this “feed the birds” thing, but you have to pay for it, so i took a picture of the glorious “bird tree” from the outside. i think that woman noticed me and was posing.

note the headless birds.

the spectacled bear. now i know they’re just making up names.

this is the best picture i could get of my favorite cat as a child, the snow leopard. lazy bastard.

they were really tooting their own horns with this captive breeding thing.

to ridiculous levels…

the wonderful thing about tiggers… is that they take horrible pictures. wait, that’s not a wonderful thing…

no day is complete without an embarrassing picture of karl.

karl got really excited about this otter toy because he is a perv, but only ken would pose for the picture.

piles of lemurs!

sara got frisky with the lemur statue…

at the gift store… (ken took this second one)

out the window of a speeding car.

at the tea and cakes place on geary.

sara has juggling geese!

BONUS PICTURE: getting ready to draw my gunny pigs. i am a cruel owner. ken took this one too.
