yorkshire!

remember when we went to england last year? yeah, well here’s another batch of pictures. still getting through them!

king’s cross was our connecting station to the Trains Going Up North. it’s really pretty but i couldn’t see it being compared to heaven or anything.

and indeed, we found the way to hogwarts. unfortunately it was blocked…

(taken by ken)

i didn’t take any pictures in harrogate because i was too busy being shocked at how much i disliked it. and trying to figure out what we were going to do and where we were going to go. yorkshire’s a lot bigger than i anticipated.

i believe this is a skip ahead to pateley bridge, where we spent our evening. we took a walk and almost made it to the nidderdale preserve, but chickened out because it was getting really dark.

next page: strolling through the sheep pastures

ken prancing. i didn’t realize i had the settings wrong on my camera for this picture, so it looks a bit surreal.

sheep! they were so supremely not happy with us.

cows! they, on the other hand, could have cared less.

i might have been watching a bunny. (taken by ken)

this path was kind of crazy, with all sorts of jerry-rigged steps for getting over walls and such. i think we lost our way a couple times, and seeing stuff like this was a big relief.

next page: rambling on the moors

our first steps onto the moors! which one is from my digital and which one from my analog? hmm?

these walls were fantastic but they didn’t seem to hold much in.

so the sheep just seemed to mill about anywhere they wanted. we’ll see later just how dangerous the consequences could be.

we got very high very quickly.

i didn’t realize it at the time (just wanted a nice picture chilling with the heather) but i look dead (taken by ken)

sorta like this rabbit i found next to me soon after. it’s art– trust me!

after this picture i had to switch completely over to digital because the light level was decreasing so fast.

probably my favorite picture of the bunch. the ground was springy, like nature’s carpet.

next page: still rambling

where’s the tower???!?!?

although i also do really like this one. it reminds me of furi kuri. or kate bush. (taken by ken)

the ill-fated consequence of unmonitored sheep milling, as i promised.

at first i thought it was just a few bones here and there, so i got distracted by this rock. but then…

i think this sheep exploded.

at this point we sort of started to fear for our lives. and between worries like that i was of course wondering how i could possibly smuggle some of these bones home.

last picture i could take on the moors of anything intelligible. we barely made it back to the town before it was pitch black on the moors.

unfortunately all the pubs were closing.

this sign says “we open 7 days a week from 5 pm. sorry i lied. closed all day thurs.”

?

the bed and breakfast where we stayed had a grommit!

next page: thirsk!

we spent the next morning in thirsk, mainly the james herriot museum.

james herriot reinforced my desire to be a vet when i was young. unfortunately i think the appeal was that back when he was a vet, the profession was absolutely crazy and had all sorts of weird medicines and theories that may or may not have worked. and a lot of hands-on grunt work. all of this seems to have been largely bred out of the veterinary profession as we know it today.

an evil dolly! i forget the story behind this. it might have just been a “sign of the times toys” display.

james herriot’s car!

see, back then demon women made half-naked vets stick their arms into cows up to their shoulders! what a time!

actually we still have to stick our arms in cows.

this guy rocked! he came to the museum and was reminded of his own experiences as a farm vet, so he sent in his pictures. i love how he still has his hat on. here’s what the note says:

“i visited the World of James Herriot on the 2nd may 1984, it brought back many memories. practice made perfect! this is me delivering a calf. no rehearsal! no mirrors!! no stuntman!!! the calf was named ‘swaledale john alderton’ and i was as proud as punch. -john alderton”

on the set of the james herriot bbc series, i got some weird pictures of ken.

IM ON TEEEEVVVVEEEEEEE LOL

next page: still in the world of herriot

hehe. ghost horse with rheumatism.

silly-ass games abounded in the children’s section.

ok, seriously wtf. no anesthetic! cats in boots! travesty.

trach rings. or gavage things. or something.

that’s right. james herriot wasn’t his REAL name.

again, wtf!

the horse was still a little miffed at his prior treatment. why he took it out on me, though, is a mystery. (taken by ken)

skulls– easily my favoritest part of anything!

when i see this picture it’s weird that my first thought is “well, this is something my mom would never do.” (taken by ken)

for me this kind of shit is a walk in the park. kind of scary, neh? (taken by ken)

ken was so tired of posing with a hand in a cow.

made by the quilters of mowbray! sadly, we never got to mowbray that day. someday though. someday.

and with that we said adieu to james herriot, and to yorkshire.

photoshop priestess is a fine title, thank you

yeah so i got praised for retouching this recently:

original

fixed

y/y? i still think the background needs some work, and i obviously cut a great deal of it out, but i was more interested in getting tehsimm! all pretty.

this scrumptious picture, by the way, is apparently only found underneath the plastic junk in the doctor who series 3 dvd set.

pity, because it would make a TERRIFIC poster.

sophia myles macros

i’m not so sure i like sophia myles. but it struck me watching the complete waste of time that is her new series, moonlight, that history is beginning to repeat itself, at least for her character.

conclusion: the doctor is easy compared to the master

this is from the scene in “utopia” where the tenth doctor is being very creepy and probably has more than a little valeyard in him. it’s not perfect, but it was meant to be a “quick” sketch. all told it took about an hour and it came together very quickly.

the doctor likes karaoke

i dressed up as the fourth doctor for a halloween karaoke night. i then proceeded to sing only songs with “time” in the title.

here i am trying vainly to get decent pictures of my costume. the boots, hat and coat were thrift store, the scarf of course is handknitted by meeeee, the shirt is from ken’s old destruction costume (it shrank considerably), and the pants are just grey dress pants from a suit i own (i’m thinking it might make a decent saxon suit, although it’s not black and i’m not that hott). i’m even wearing an old yale key, although you can’t see it in these pictures.

i just like how sinister this one turned out.

laura managed to get some pictures of me singing “time after time.”

laura went as a fallen angel. suits her 🙂

maja went as shawn!

side-by-side with the real thang. a little eerie!

laura looks so innocent here.

i decided this looked better in black and white.

shawn #1 and 2 sang a dave matthews band song together!

laura appropriates my hat

aw bff lol

the master is hard to draw

still not completely satisfied, but here is a week and a half of work. i think i can safely say, without exaggeration, that every line was redrawn at least 3 times.

i singlehandedly gave laura a random service award at the craft center the other day. this is the picture i took of her:

fanvid: to lose is to win (doctor who)

i finished my latest fanvid. yeah yeah it’s another simm!master one, but to my credit it was for a challenge on a livejournal community. we had to pick a song that came out the year we graduated high school, and “escape” by muse technically first came out on an EP released in 1998. it was the only song in my evergrowing vid queue* that fit.

warnings:
-spoilers for the three part finale of doctor who series 3.
-too much sepia tone filtering (i stole the idea for how to do flashbacks from the awesome awesome awesome dark!willow video “emotion sickness” by nicky
-too many tear-jerky moments

watch it here

*seriously, you should see the .txt file i’ve got full of songs paired with fandoms that i’m eventually hoping to do. it’s huge, and most of it is doctor who, and half of that is simm!master vids.

doctor who fanfilms 3:1

new season of doctor who fanfilms is beginning. here’s the opener, where i get to be a badass. this one may be a bit too music video, but it’s definitely not outside the realm of the actual series.

more red and finished scarf!

so i finished my scarf and i redyed my hair (it was turning a rather unappealing blonde-orange, although some people liked the “tequila sunrise” effect. i myself prefer it red red red.

first, the scarf

see what i did thar?

there might be someone who hasn’t seen the third series finale of doctor who yet, and i’m not going to be the one to spoil them. but there’s something really good on the next page.

the story behind this–

John Simm: “We were shooting one scene, just me and David, on top of this deserted mountain-top. We’re giving it our all when, from f**k knows where, you can hear the faint sound of an ice-cream van. David carried on so I thought, well, I’m not going to stop if you’re not going to stop. So we carried on right to the end, despite the fact that this must be the only ice-cream van in existence that does the theme tune to The Benny Hill Show — the least intergalactic sound imaginable!”

harry potter comic NO SPOILERS

i made this yesterday in a fit of bad taste. it’s sort of perry bible fellowship-esque:

i’m sort of proud of it, despite the horrid coloring job on a few panels.

scarf progress and hair progress

so i dyed my hair red this week. ken helped me bleach it and it looked so odd because in the lower half, the green/blue came partially back. so i kept it like that for a few days:

(taken by ken)

then came the red, just yesterday, after much whinging, fretting, purchasing, and strand testing:

it’s still not exactly how i wanted it. i may add some of this other color i have, that gives wicked auburn highlights.

this next picture shows how much of a tasteless geek i am:

next page: scarf!

second order of business: the doctor who scarf i’ve been knitting has been progressing and i’m almost half done. here are some pictures i was conscripted to take by the knitalong community i’m part of (the theme was something/somewhere indicative of your current locale– mine is a college bike town).

bikes: check!

weird-ass on-campus installation art: check!
