laura’s birthday, 2006
yes, so here is laura’s birthday dinner and after-events, of which i took like twenty pictures and pared down to less than half. most of these are not particularly good, but at least this is photographic evidence that, yes, laura does have birthdays. speaking of laura, i really need to call her.
the remains of the dinner
claire + jack = OTP
laura knows how to make booze happen
says it all, really

cool hike fall 2006
current lag time of photographs= more than two years. this is no longer even edging on pathetic, it’s flung itself clear over the cliff.
this is a hike we did in a little town called cool, near auburn, ca. we were promised a swimming hole at the end of this trail, and it did not disappoint. half the pictures were processed before i got my new monitor, so the colors aren’t quite as awesome. but most of them aren’t worth going back and fixing, to be honest, so you’ll just have to suffer a little.
most of the hikes in auburn start out like this, all dry and dusty and intermittently shady.
ken likes rocks.
eating lunch at a convenient stream

nature’s graffiti
here is what we were really after. it’s like some sort of natural coliseum.
it comes with its own waterfall! (taken by ken)
it was too cold to do much swimming
so we mostly harassed frogs instead.
man vs nature: the epic cowering
welcome to cool!

chris and richard’s house party 2006
these are pretty old but i’m trying to finish up some digital camera pictures. i rushed through these (which means it took about three weeks from the time i started) and tried to practice tossing photos that weren’t quite right or that would take too long to make right… which is why there’s only about a roll’s worth this time around. i mainly just cropped and leveled these except for a few i just couldn’t resist tinkering with.

punishment-seeking behavior
i don’t really feel like talking
i know you’re a thin membrane away
a short breath away from a connection
a spark i just can’t bring myself to strike
and i sit up here and watch
thousands of feet up
i know you know i’m here
and you’re there
but i don’t feel like talking, baby
not tonight
not tonight
not tonight
no, tonight i think i would rather stay inside myself
and hurt for a little while
and burn
enclosed and safe and remote, a baleful eye in the sky
watching
watching
watching
tonight i think i would rather stay up
i can’t afford to dream

rats like trash
ladies and gentlemen, tonight i had rats on my desk. and when rats are feeling frisky with more than a few sunflower seeds in their bellies, and on a desk, be warned: they have a propensity to get into trouble.
see how the remains of this pear are in a bowl, precariously balanced on a pile of dishes?
yeah, that lasted long. house freaked out at the noise of crashing dishes, by the way, and immediately scurried behind my desktop speakers, nearly falling off the desk 😀 dweeb.
not the best picture, but i had to document the licking of the pear. they did an awful lot of this.
amazingly, wilson is the big troublemaker of the pair. house just gets injured a lot. guess rats don’t follow canon very closely.
house is gother than you.
bonus picture of ken at sophia’s tonight!

karaoke bday pics!
so here’s the first half of the pictures from my karaoke party back on my birthday. thanks to mike’s really expensive lens we got sort-of-okay pictures. which, with dimness and drunkenness and limited equipment, well, what do you want.
some test pictures with mike, gretchen and alan
laura dreams of the cocktails she will soon make herself
i totally forgot what alan was singing. i just had to look it up (alanis morissette’s “ironic”, a birthday request from me)
janie just looks like a rocker. god. i might have to go through and re-level some of these, they look awful.
i can’t stop taking pictures of gretchen, apparently.
everybody ended up using this mic stand as an emotional crutch. you’ll see, in other pictures. it’s so odd.
gretch ponders her next song choice…
haha, we made mike sing “sweet child o’ mine”!
alan decides he’s slash
ken looks thrilled to be singing!
laura looks thrilled at the prospect of another drink!
i just look like a freaking weirdo. taken by laura
taken by laura
in these pictures janie was always in motion while her friend stood still. always.
here i am looking like john lennon. but i’m singing bryan adams’ “everything i do, i do it for you”
hah. the party reaction is less ecstatic and more “is she done yet?”
my american idol big finish!
alan ponders the big mistake of saying he’ll sing nin’s “closer”
but he bravely carries on anyway!
james is about to pick a godawful song. you can see it in his eyes.
yup, it’s cotton eye joe.
…
i love the dynamic here.
alan is so drunk right about now.
so then evan sings hot chocolate’s “you sexy thing” and he’s surprisingly really good at it.
SO GOOD IT HURTS.
my favorite one of janie.
ALAN DILL SAYS WELCOME TO THE NIGHTMARE (the guys got up to sing frank sinatra’s “my way.”)
for some reason ken takes a break in the middle of singing this to talk to laura. unfortunately when he talks to other women his hands explode. it’s a gypsy curse thing.
big finish
this is about when Drunken Hyper Mario begins to emerge. he’s a good singer.
“a song? why not? in fact, why not…”
“nin’s ‘head like a hole’?”
“no, you can’t take that away from m– ok, well i guess you can if you really try hard enough.”
i photoshopped this because i liked ken’s total nonchalance to mario’s emotional musical breakdown. that really did happen, but now the picture reflects that wonderful moment all the more.
taken by laura, i believe
also taken by laura. had no idea someone was giving me moose horns.
taken by laura
taken by laura. alan and i sang radiohead’s “high and dry” and everyone sang along with the chorus 😀
james took a picture of us. (also taken by laura)
says it all.
this too. actually.
he’s not falling, he’s dancing.
mike seemed bored over in the corner.
so i gave him a guinea pig. at first he was ambivalent…
but soon he warmed up to stark.
taken by laura. at some point we decided, “ok, ‘bohemian rhapsody.'” i think this is when freddie mercury is wailing that he doesn’t want to die. the only way you can truly tell i’m drunk from this picture is that i took my drink with me. singing from the floor during an epic moment is ALWAYS a good idea.
james’ jazz hands.
oh, and i realized i never posted this, but mario is totally john simm.
stay tuned for part 2! only about 100 pictures left to sort through!

many sketches
new stuff
donna! catherine tate really reminded me of tori amos in this scene.
a really cute mom and son that came into the craft center the other day.
i decided i was going to try my hand at caricaturing/cartooning doctor who characters…
this is actually from christmas but i think it has better company in this batch
<3<3 for that scarf, master.
delgado already WAS a caricature, really…
older stuff that i came across
pre-sketch for a poster i never made. cast of house, second season. wilson and chase never fail to crack me up in this picture.
ani difranco from her up up up up up up album.
fiona apple from her tidal album. i drew this while getting over a breakup, actually. she just looked really powerful and strong, facing into the wind.

srsly, he’s probably the only person who could pull off making him look respectable since the classic series
someone over at ihasatardis lj mentioned that david tennant has reportedly expressed interest in playing the riddler in a batman film. to which i respond:
simm for penguin?

dancing with the stars
when you look around and notice there is nothing around
that everyone gives you your damned treasured distance, finally
and you offhandedly one-handedly distractedly push away
anyone who dares to cross that line
so automatic, such a slow process you don’t even notice the shell anymore
when you’re given the admiration you so richly deserved
through fear
and you realize that yes, you’ve become cool
and you realize, that yes, it doesn’t really matter because it hasn’t brought you any sort of
connections
and you realize that yes, you recognize this face, this act, this facade, this disaster
the face of someone you so hated, once upon a time,
the face of someone who broke you so badly that you never wanted to feel anything again
when you first started building this shell, this shell of cool and distance and sarcasm and quick wit
because you just wanted to survive
wanted to be just like them to push away the consequences of that first faltered leap of faith
when you open your mouth and find their words pouring out, unadulterated
so similar that even you are horrified
don’t worry
you’ve finally made it baby

stuff i’ve done more recently
here are some things i did that i haven’t mentioned yet:
my first watercolor that i didn’t immediately hide away in shame. i started this a year ago in class and finished it up during a power outage. i know the ravens are a little large. leave me alone.
i finished my doctor who season 18 scarf, with the best yarn i’ve ever found (now, sadly, discontinued), a while ago. it’s significantly shorter than the original pattern, but that’s due to poor planning. it’s a fine length still, because the (@#$@#%%@discontinued#@$@#%#%#@^@^) yarn stretches well.
i’ve been cutting my own hair for about a year, but this time i experimented with layers. this is a pretty recent picture, but i’m redying it tomorrow. taken by ken.

grad group retreat 06
still working through my 2006/2007 pictures. here’s my grad group’s annual retreat from a year ago, at mclaughlin natural reserve. which is apparently an old mining site or something.
the scavenger hunt
this one always reminds me of the wizard of oz
and we always find bones.
pretty but toxic.
we found boxes with riddles on the bottom, and had to solve them to figure out which animal was inside the box. i hoarded most of the animals afterwards.
we got odd prizes.
i like taking pictures of laura.

at some point my lens got a smear on it. i kind of like how some of the pictures turned out though; it softened the harsh sunlight.

after the scavenger hunt some lady came in with a small bat on her hand. while i was there i was obviously fascinated with the bat, but looking back i find i’m now much more fixated on her hands.
this looks like an album cover.

this one cracks me up.

KEEP OUT OF THE TREE
i like this one a lot too.
don’t know what this is.

i adore how i managed to line up this one.

this was a neat field station, it’s just the rest of the place was a little scary.
right before we left the next morning i had to take more pictures of the bones.
i just happen to like apples. (taken by ken)

york 2006
in 2006, just as a refresher for ally’all, we went to england. on our final day there we went to york.
knaresborough
an amazing village with an amazing castle we found on our way to york (or thirsk– can’t remember the exact order of things). these knaresborough ones were all taken with the analog, and they all came out pretty badly.
i actually can’t remember if the last two here are from york or knaresborough.
york minster abbey
this church wasn’t more beautiful than the others, or even more densely packed with religious what-nots. but its iconography was definitely a lot weirder.
again, didn’t come out so well, but i was so amused by the gargoyles that just stick out straight into space.
such a pimp.
all benevolent men, i’m sure. because only benevolent men get statue-fied against the wall of a church. are these kings? priests? madmen? honestly i dont remember, and honestly i’m not sure there was a difference.
headless semaphore angels, CHECK. york abbey has it all.
next page: more york minster abbey

steer your life by these stars.
see this is where it starts getting weird.
another similarity between england and logan airport in boston: everything is under constant construction.
ken looks so vicious.
next page: up on the wall
on the wall
york was a paranoid city, surrounded by a fantastic wall that you are only allowed on top of in the daylight (they close the gates down below at night. i wonder if anyone ever gets stranded up there?).
york had some pretty interesting secluded park areas.
ken was so sick of my picture-taking by the end of this trip.
a set of stairs coming down from the wall.
next page: york down below
york down below
we walked around for a bit on our way back to the train station.
you don’t say! another graveyard?
best name for a street ever. there’s a whole story about this, but basically it is derived from a similar-sounding name that means “what a street!” indeed. although on second glance this seems similar to the suspiciously circular type of advertising used in charlotte’s web.
some church or another, who can be arsed to keep track?
some other castle or another.
this was taken under no light, but photoshop rescued it. good old girl.
york station.
coming home
this is the next and last picture i took (that actually turned out). it’s ken on the bus back home. 🙂

what has i done
srsly.
inspired by an earlier ihasatardis post and also the george washington video i started to wonder we’ve found another of the master’s previous incarnations. i was going to make a few macros from it and then i just couldn’t stop so um.
i macroed the entire song. there’s a few behind a cut and then a link to the rest in its lj gallery because i thought 72 images was a bit much to post at once. sry (not really). i suggest using the nav links and just flipping through it. maybe i’ll eventually make an animation of it.
watching the original video first (in addition to the new doctor who series three season ending episodes, of course) makes the most sense for understanding what the hell i just spent… all day doing 0.o
the first verse is on the next page.
